Upper South Long Lake, Crow Wing County (ID 18-0096)

Upper South Long Lake is located in southeastern Crow Wing County, southeast of the city of Brainerd. The lake is 802 acres in size and includes 283 acres of littoral zone. The lake supports populations of walleye, northern pike, largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, green and pumpkinseed sunfish. Upper South Long Lake is occassionally stocked with walleye, including 4,625 fingerling and 740 yearling in 1998, 11,320 fingerling in 2000, 20 fingerling in 2001, and 12,360 yearling in 2002.

The lake reaches a maximum depth of 47 feet and supports abundant and diverse aquatic plant communities to a depth of 12 feet. Upper South Long Lake only occassionally experiences algae growth that can impair recreation and aesthetic activities upon the lake. The substrate on the lake bottom includes sand, gravel, and marl.
